For advice on entering the Marvel and comic blockbusters world, Debicki sought out her The Night Manager co-star, Tom Hiddleston. Hiddleston was relatively unknown before he snagged the role of Loki in 2011’s Thor. Now he’s an international superstar. He was also one of the first people Debicki called when she was cast in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
“I knew he would be really chuffed about it,” she said. “We’d spoken about it and I was curious about what it was like to make those films.
“He’s so successful on those films because he, as Loki, manages to layer in so much complexity into that character — he brings a lot of emotional truth to it and that’s a testament to his capacity as an actor.”
Debicki said Hiddleston also talked her through what it was like to act in a less naturalistic setting. “I’d only worked with a green screen in Gatsby and that wasn’t action — it was really only so they could CGI buildings or something in. But working with a green screen is an art form and I remember Tom and I had a lot of conversations about it. So we discussed it on that basis and when I got the role, I called him and he was really excited,” she said.

In the new “I Saw the Light,” British actor Tom Hiddleston does a captivating job singing the music and capturing the sense of heartache so central to country music pioneer Hank Williams.
As few people today know exactly what Williams looked like, it doesn’t matter all that much that the talented Hiddleston doesn’t look all that much like the taller and rougher around the edges Williams.
No, the London-born actor can’t quite recreate Williams’ range and totally nail the yodeling that was a big part of some hits.
But the music sounds authentic, Hiddleston’s foreign accent is nowhere to be found and the actor manages to paint his character with some of the sadness that was such a part of his short life.

Hiddleston convincingly mimics the iconic performer’s distinct vocal cadences both onstage and off, but more importantly it’s a performance that goes beyond the superficial, conveying just the right notes of charm, vulnerability, and underlying desperation.
Despite Hiddleston’s impressive transformation and the great soundtrack, I Saw the Light is likely to disappoint fans of Hank Williams, ultimately doing little to shed light on the man behind the music.

Hiddleston deserves the MVP award: he has the lanky looks for the part, carefully polished singing skills and he is expressive enough to turn an overblown archetype of vain musical excess into a plausible character. The weak link here is everything else.
