Tom Hiddleston (and Tom Holland) Panel Report--Ace Comic-Con Seattle, 6/24/2018

So I took along a little journal to keep note of what Tom had to say at his panel. It’s not complete (I didn’t, for instance, take notes on stories I’d heard Tom tell on more than one occasion) but I took note of funny stories, moments, new stories, etc.

Before the panel started, they played a game where they picked out 9 kids from the audience, including miniature versions of Doctor Strange, Spiderman, Captain America and Thor. The kids stayed in their characters, introducing themselves as Stephen Strange, Spider-Man (from Canada!), Steve Rogers, etc. The moderator told the kids super lame superhero jokes, and the game was not to laugh and they’d each get a free comic book. It wasn’t hard, because the jokes weren’t remotely funny. But the audience laughed–at the kid’s unimpressed expressions All the kids were winners, even though Thor giggled a little at the last joke being about Odin. I can’t remember what it was exactly. They all got comics.

On to Tom!

Now to decipher my hurried handwriting…I just have notes, not entire exchanges. Some of it is me paraphrasing and not exact quotes. Anyone who can fill in gaps in my memory, feel free to add your comments!

*There were no fan questions. I can’t elaborate on this more without speculation, but many assumed it was because of the mishap at Saturday’s panel with Sebastian Stan, Tom Holland, and Anthony Mackie. I was not there for that panel. But really all I have are assumptions *

Tom is announced, comes onstage to huge cheers.

-Tom starts out by being the lovely, sincere person he is and thanking everyone for coming, being honored to be there–I didn’t write down what he said, but it was classic kind, caring Tom

-He knew about Loki’s death in Infinity War two years before it was filmed! He said how Loki’s arc came around full circle, how he now had his identity as Odinson again, also claiming Jotenheim. He talked about how Loki died to save his brother.

-Tom was asked about a pool fight with Chris Hemsworth. He said the cast went to see Kenneth Branagh before the first Thor started filming. Ken wanted to have a talk with Natalie Portman about Jane’s background and told Chris and Tom to go train. Tom said they went and lifted logs, jogged, stretched–and then decided, “Let’s go swimming!” He talked about a moment when they were in the pool and they just looked at each other and both broke into smiles. He knew this was going to be awesome–it was like they’d won the lottery, playing brothers. They got along well. They were like 2 kids embarking on a great journey.

-Tom complimented Chris, saying he was “brilliant” in Infinity War.

-Said that playing Loki was a gift–a fascinating antagonist. There was a challenge to presenting an exterior and interior of Loki…something motivated by anger, spite, loneliness–the sort of things we all suppress-that can become egomania and narcissism, hubris. He saw a vulnerability in Loki.

-Loki is also the god of mischief, so he felt it was his “professional obligation to have a good time” and find that childish part of himself.

-Tom said that “Loki is not truly evil. He never was.” He also (in mythology and such) was exactly who the gods needed at particular times. He represented chaos, “but sometimes what you need is a bit of chaos! Asgard wouldn’t be the same without him.”

-Tom said that on the set of War Horse, he and Benedict Cumberbatch “learned how to fall off horses together.”

-Moderator says that Loki being Hulk-smashed was his favorite part in the movie(s). Tom: “I remember being Hulk-smashed very fondly.” He loses all power in that moment. He talked again about how Mark Ruffalo’s son was on set a lot and he thought the whole Hulk-smash scene was hysterical. Tom said of course only part of the smashing he had to endure, haha–he talked about jumping into trenches on set, and how he felt insane. I can’t remember if it was Tom or the moderator who said that Loki deserved being Hulk-smashed at that point. Tom: “You don’t call the Hulk a ‘dull creature’ and get away unscathed.”

-Moderator talked about how all the Avengers are heroes but are not shining examples of perfect humans, either. They all have hardships in their past, loss, etc. Tom agreed, saying. “Humanity [is what] connects all of us. It’s why you’re here, it’s why I’m here.”

-Tom is asked what would be on Loki’s playlist. He deliberates while fans call out “Shakira”, “Eminem” and I can’t remember what else. Tom said at San Diego Comic-Con there was a lot of Daft Punk. He settled on saying something upbeat.

-Tom’s first day filming Thor was the scene on Jotenheim with Laufey, who was dismissive of Thor’s hubris. Loki sensed that this was a fight they may not win, and tells Thor to think before acting. He said it made him and Chris feel like their characters were very connected–two halves of a whole. Even then Loki sensed that something wasn’t quite right before he even learned his lineage.

-Tom was asked if it’s tough to wear the horns. “The horns have their own story!” Tom laughed. He said the helmet was too tight and covered his ears so that he couldn’t hear anyone’s lines and was always going, “What?” Tom said it took away Loki’s sense of hubris–Tom mimed cupping his ear and said, “Could you speak up a little?”

-They talk about Infinity Stones, and how they didn’t really know what they were dealing with back then, and how important/dangerous the stones and Thanos were. “Loki was the catalyst to creating the Avengers.” They are asked if it was Josh Brolin who played Thanos in our first post-credits glimpse of him. Yes, it was! “Josh must’ve been chomping at the bit to [finally] play Thanos.” They talk about Josh’s appearance on a talk show, and Thanos’s reasoning behind depleting half the life in the universe, because of limited resources. But couldn’t he have used the gauntlet to just double the resources? He didn’t think of it. It makes him lose credibility.

-Tom Holland crashes Tom’s panel. He surprises him by hugging him around the neck/shoulders from behind the couch before joining Tom on the couch. I’ve seen gifs of this floating around.

-Tom Hiddleston says they are now Tom H ².

-Tom Holland can’t remember the words “shoulder pads” in a story. Tom Hiddleston helps him out. He taps his shoulder. “A shoulder. This is the shoulder.” he mimes a cushion. “This is the pad.”

-Tom asked if Loki’s death scene was the last scene he filmed in Infinity War. (Me–of course it was, he only has one scene in IW! The phrase seemed to be asked so to avoid potential spoilers since the moderator specified the last scene filmed in INFINITY WAR, not as Loki. Because we’ve all seen those leaked set photos from Avengers 4, right?) Tom said the death scene was filmed in April 2017 and it was an emotional 3 days of filming.

-Tom said something about his mentor from drama school being on set. I didn’t hear what else he said because of a sudden disturbance behind me. I don’t want to be rude, so that’s all I’ll say about why I couldn’t hear it all.

-After filming Loki’s death scene, the Russo brothers went up to him and said emotionally, “Respect.”

-Anthony Hopkins was one of Tom Hiddleston’s acting heroes growing up. Apparently, he likes going by Tony, not Sir Anthony ;D

-Sunday morning, Holland said both Toms were huddled together in their pajamas watching England play on an iPad. Tom Hiddleston: “Yep, that’s how it went.” Can we have some fanart of this scene, please? It sounds adorable

-Tom Holland talked about how cool it was filming with Michael Keaton, and when he saved him from the burning wreckage. Michael: Why did you save me? Tom: Because I’m Spider-Man. Michael: But…I’m Batman.

-Toms are asked about what they think of the likenesses of their action figures. Tom Holland’s took a few tries. But they must’ve got it right because sometimes it freaks him out like it’s watching him. The action figures are by his TV. He’ll turn them around. Tom said more than collecting, he likes to give away action figures. He recently went to a hospital in London, where there was a screening of Infinity War for sick children who hadn’t been able to go see it. He gave all the kids Loki toys. There was a 30 minute Q&A, but all the questions were about why the Avengers all have beards (when they’re just their real selves). Loki doesn’t have a beard! Tom responded that Loki is a shapeshifter, so that’s why his hair looks so different and he has a beard.

-Tom Hiddleston’s pretty sure that RDJ calling Loki “Reindeer Games” was ad-libbed.

-Both Toms talk about how funny Chris Hemsworth is. Tom Holland talks about meeting Chris while filming In the Heart of the Sea, and how funny he is. Tom Hiddleston said the funniest line to him in Thor is when Thor goes into a pet store looking for a horse, and the employee says they only had dogs, cats, and birds. “Then give me one of those large enough to ride.” I’m with Tom there–I watched Thor again just last night and that line never fails to make me laugh

-Tom says, “Chris has funny bones.”

-The panel was clearly wrapping up at this point. A bunch of fans were like no, wait! And dove into the aisles to line up for questions. The moderator didn’t seem happy about this…the Toms said they could take a few questions, but the moderator closed by saying, “Tom Hiddleston and Tom Holland, everybody!” maybe their names were reversed lol– a small detail, but I had stopped taking notes by this point. And then it was over. Tom Hiddleston waved and I’m pretty sure I saw him blow a kiss–there were lots of people getting up and distractions but I don’t *think* I imagined it…

По словам Файги, через две недели закончатся съемки «Капитана Марвел» и тут же начнется производство второго «Человека-паука». Четвертые «Мстители» же находятся в постпродакшене. Премьера фильма состоится 2 мая 2019 года. Подзаголовок Marvel пока раскрывать не собирается.»
